Matamata, home of the Hobbiton film set, is only 40 minutes from Tauranga. Significant parts of the Lord of the Rings movie were filmed on this set. Hobbiton is the name of the village that hobbits, like Frodo and Bilbo Baggins, lived in and the construction of their tiny homes is fascinating to see.
The tour begins with a picturesque drive through a Waikato sheep farm that has a spectacular view across to the Kaimai ranges. It involves being guided through the 10 acre site and being given insight on how the Hobbiton set was created. Tours operate daily.
